| Game Summary (Larry Smith, NetFL Press) The football gods smiled down upon the LLL franchise this weekend. A wounded team was provided the perfect elixir, DH, at an opportune time.
Because, if it had been anyone else but the offensively challenged DH, every LLL player would be changing their ring tones to Taps this morning. Luckily, LLL ran into an opponent with much less margin for error than themselves, or they'd no doubt be nursing the losing column with yet another embarrassing loss.
One big reason that LLL can exhale today is that DH was talent-deficient enough to lose control of a game they had a chance to win. They looked so blundering as they heaved a sharpened stick during the game and set fire to my neighbor's gaudy yard art - metaphorically speaking.
The score of 40-36 in front of a despondent home crowd for LLL was aided by a ferocious defense, but even larger was the help provided by a reeling opponent that constantly pushed the wrong personnel buttons. No wonder the blundering DH have been such a welcome sight in opposing stadiums for so long. LLL sure caught them on the right day.
It's doubtful that the LLL defenders could have corralled a grandmother strolling across the field with the same ease as they did the DH quarterback. "Instead of him looking down the field, he was looking to see who was coming," said Robert Mathis with 20 points on defense, a huge smile on his face. "Let's just say he got rattled a little bit."
Still, LLL might not have escaped without a goto player to energize the offense - DH's very own Yeremiah Bell. He was relentlessly victimized, continuously torched play after play before the DH coaching staff mercifully pulled him, as he played about as well as a frog pithed by an epileptic first-grader.
"Picking on Yeremiah Bell was a part of the game plan," Carson Palmer with 43 points on offense said. "We should have been doing it more in the first half of the game."
How true. When a NetFL team needs a pick-me-up, they can usually count on DH to deliver. LLL trails the all-time series 3-25 against DH. LLL has a 1-11 regular season record. DH has a 9-3 regular season record (1-2 in this year's playoffs).
Though the game was already decided on the field, apparently neither team was done. Scott Lawrence grumbled, "I'm not saying that this is true, mind you, but I'm not saying it isn't. I heard tell that that owner of theirs has been kidnapping small children and selling them on the Chinese black market. Do I respect him? Does anyone?" In response, the DH coach waxed poetic, stating, "I suppose every league needs a doormat. I feel some degree of scorn for them to be sure, but mostly, I just shake my head and watch them bumble their way from game to game with a sense of detached amusement." |
