| Game Summary (Larry Smith, NetFL Press) The football gods smiled down upon the SP franchise this weekend. A wounded team was provided the perfect elixir, MHD, at an opportune time.
Because, if it had been anyone else but the offensively challenged MHD, every SP player would be changing their ring tones to Taps this morning. Luckily, SP ran into an opponent with much less margin for error than themselves, or they'd no doubt be nursing the losing column with yet another embarrassing loss.
One big reason that SP can exhale today is that MHD was talent-deficient enough to lose control of a game they had a chance to win. They looked so wanting as they dragged a meat cleaver during the game and set fire to my neighbor's gaudy yard art - metaphorically speaking.
The score of 53-50 in front of a despondent home crowd for SP was aided by a ferocious defense, but even larger was the help provided by a reeling opponent that constantly pushed the wrong personnel buttons. No wonder the wanting MHD have been such a welcome sight in opposing stadiums for so long. SP sure caught them on the right day.
It's doubtful that the SP defenders could have corralled a grandmother strolling across the field with the same ease as they did the MHD quarterback. "Instead of him looking down the field, he was looking to see who was coming," said Demario Davis with 10 points on defense, a huge smile on his face. "Let's just say he got rattled a little bit."
Still, SP might not have escaped without a goto player to energize the offense - MHD's very own James Harrison. He was relentlessly victimized, continuously torched play after play before the MHD coaching staff mercifully pulled him, as he was as sharp as a sponge today.
"Picking on James Harrison was a part of the game plan," Colin Kaepernick with 27 points on offense said. "We should have been doing it more in the first half of the game."
How true. When a NetFL team needs a pick-me-up, they can usually count on MHD to deliver. SP leads the all-time series 11-7 against MHD. SP has a 2-2 regular season record. MHD has a 2-2 regular season record.
"Dem's fightin' woids!": Fuel was added to the fire during the two teams' post game news conferences. Michael Sutanto noted, "Thinking about them forces me to draw parallels between them and the Bulgarians." He was quick to add, "Erm, the Byzantine Empire had to deal with those clods... made themselves quite a nuisance 'til Basil crushed 'em and cut their eyes out - well, he left a couple of 'em with one eye so's they could guide the others home. I can't help but think that motivations such as that would help their cause." In response, the MHD coach whined, "Like 'em? No... not really. I'd rather strangle puppies in front of a dozen orphans than pull that wretched owner of theirs out of a burning building." |
